Travel Mobility

Air travel with a wheelchair takes way more planning than most trips.

Between battery rules, weight limits, and the real risk of damage in transit, choosing the right chair makes everything less stressful.

An airline-approved wheelchair is built for exactly this: lightweight, foldable, and battery-powered, while also meeting airline requirements.

At Conval-Aid, we carry travel folding wheelchairs from some of the most trusted names in portable mobility, along with a full range of mobility equipment and home care products.

Here is a look at four of the best travel airline-approved wheelchairs available, what makes a power chair flight-ready, and what to confirm before you book.

Disclaimer: These wheelchairs focus on domestic air travel in Canada. “Airline approved” means that the wheelchair’s design meets most airline and airport security requirements. Always confirm your airport and airline restrictions before travelling.

The Jazzy Carbon HD ships with a 20Ah battery that exceeds airline Watt-hour limits. Order the optional 10Ah airline-friendly battery for flying.

Travel Buggy AEROLUX 2C

This travel wheelchair is a strong choice for air travel because at 33 lbs, it is easier for caregivers or airline staff to lift and handle, while still supporting up to 300 lbs.

The AEROLUX 2C features a cross-folding design that collapses to a narrow 12-inch width, making it easy to prepare the chair for airport handling, vehicle storage, or compact storage at your destination.

The carbon fibre frame keeps the chair light, while the 24V/10Ah lithium-ion battery provides a practical travel range of up to 20km (12.5 miles) for airports, hotels, sightseeing, and daily outings.

Pride Jazzy Ultra Light

This is Pride’s lightest Jazzy power chair, weighing 33 lbs without the 10Ah battery. Its lightweight frame and quick-folding design make it easier to load into a vehicle, move through airport drop-off areas, and prepare for airline handling.

The range on the Jazzy Ultra Light tops out around 23.6 km (14.7 miles), enough for a full day of sightseeing, and front suspension smooths out cobblestones and uneven pavement that you might encounter at your destination.

Travel Buggy Grand Tourer (GT)

The Travel Buggy Grand Tourer is heavier than the AEROLUX 2C, but it offers more comfort-focused features. At 49 lbs, it remains portable while providing a longer range of up to 25 km (15.5 miles).

Features such as three driving modes, adjustable armrests, a 3-inch cushion, and a compact folded profile make it a better option for people who want a little more comfort on full days out at their destination.

Pride Jazzy Carbon HD

The Pride Jazzy Carbon HD is the higher-capacity option in this group. It supports up to 400 lbs while still weighing only 32.2 lbs without the battery, which is unusual for a folding travel power chair.

It’s especially helpful for users who need a stronger weight capacity but still want a folding chair for travel. The standard battery included is a 20Ah lithium battery, so ensure to grab the additional 10Ah airline-friendly battery.

Our Trusted Travel Mobility Brands

Travel Buggy

Travel Buggy is a Canadian mobility brand focused on portable power wheelchairs.

Founded in Edmonton in 2017, Travel Buggy started when its founders could not find a foldable power chair light enough for their aging grandmother, so they designed their own.

Its chairs are designed around folding frames, lightweight materials, and travel-friendly features, making them a strong fit for people who need a chair that can move between home, vehicles, airports, hotels, and day-to-day outings.

Pride Mobility

Pride Mobility started in 1986, when the Meuser and Kretchik families began manufacturing lift chairs in a small building in Pittston, Pennsylvania.

The company introduced the Jazzy Power Chair in 1996, which became one of its signature mobility lines and helped establish Pride as a major name in power mobility.

Its Jazzy power chair series includes several lightweight and folding models built for users who want more independence at home and while travelling.

Medline offers a huge selection of pouches, ostomy belts, skin adhesives, and more for Canadians and Americans.

What Does "Airline Approved" Mean?

“Airline approved” is a helpful phrase, but it is not a universal guarantee.

A better way to think about it is this: an airline-approved wheelchair is designed to meet the common practical requirements of air travel, but the final decision depends on the airline, aircraft, battery, and chair dimensions.

Most travel power wheelchairs use lithium-ion batteries. In Canada, CATSA says lithium batteries used to operate mobility devices, such as wheelchairs and scooters, are allowed through the checkpoint, and one spare battery up to 300 Wh is permitted.

CATSA also advises travellers to inform their airline in advance and notify the screening officer when they arrive at the checkpoint.

This means you should know your battery details before you fly. Also, bring the battery label, chair manual, or battery specification sheet with you. If the battery is removable, ask your airline whether it should stay attached, be removed, or be carried separately.

Cargo hold weight limits vary by aircraft and airline. The Canadian Transportation Agency requires Canadian airlines to transport mobility aids when notified at least 48 hours before the flight, with limited exceptions for cargo door size, aircraft safety, or lift capacity.

However, carriers may refuse to transport a mobility aid in limited situations, such as when the cargo door is too small, the cargo compartment cannot accommodate it, the lift or ramp cannot handle it, or transporting the aid would jeopardize aircraft safety.

This is why it is important to check your airline’s mobility-aid policy before booking. Different Canadian airlines may have different requirements for chair weight, dimensions, battery handling, advance notice, and aircraft compatibility.

For example, two of Canada’s largest airlines provide their own guidance: WestJet’s wheelchair and mobility aid policy and Air Canada’s mobility aids and assistance policy

No matter which airline you choose, confirm your wheelchair’s details directly before you fly, as acceptance may depend on the aircraft used for your specific route.

Airline staff need clear instructions for folding, lifting, powering down, and safely handling your chair. Walk gate agents through the freewheel lever, fold mechanism, and battery release before they load it.

Air Canada’s Powered Mobility Air Information Form recommends bringing any specialty tools required and printing two copies: one to attach to the mobility aid and one to keep as a reference. We recommend laminating the version being attached to your mobility aid.

Before handing over your chair, take photos of the frame, joystick, armrests, wheels, seat, and any existing marks. You can also protect exposed controls with padding, as long as airline staff can still access what they need to move and secure the chair safely.

Travel Mobility FAQs

A travel mobility scooter may be a good option if you want a longer range, a tiller-style steering system, and a vehicle-like feel. A power chair is usually better for tighter indoor spaces, more precise manoeuvring, and users who prefer joystick control.

The models in this guide use lithium-ion batteries. Battery size matters because not every battery configuration is intended for airline travel. Before you fly, confirm the battery’s specs and ask the airline whether the battery should remain attached, be removed, or be carried separately.

Not always. Many folding wheelchairs are transported folded rather than fully disassembled. However, the airline may require the battery to be removed or secured, and some parts may require special handling. The safest approach is to bring written instructions showing how to fold the chair, disconnect power, release the wheels if needed, and protect the joystick.

Some airlines or aircraft limit the weight of the chair itself, not just the user’s weight. Before booking, confirm the total weight of the mobility aid with the airline.

Yes, all are easy to fold in under 30 seconds. Airline staff may not be familiar with your specific chair. Bring clear folding instructions and attach a copy to the chair before handing it over.
